No training event stands alone. For maximum impact, each learning resource, event, and activity should integrate into a larger, more comprehensive experience.
But how do learning professionals, who have a multitude of traditional models in their toolkit, adapt their approaches to support this evolution?
Chris King, Principal Consultant at CRK Learning, has some ideas, and they focus on a foundation of corporate partnerships, adaptability, prototyping, and communication. When asked for the advice he’d give to new practitioners in the training field, he shared:
"Keep your options open. Most of you have a strong body of knowledge for instructional design, but I think it’s calcified, so it’s hard for instructional designers to break out from the ruts they’re in. Bring in UX, Marketing, economists, and data scientists from different disciplines. They all have an influence that will help you navigate this world you’re living in. Instructional design doesn’t work quite as well anymore. Performance support needs to be the focus of our effort."
This process won’t be easy. It involves stepping out of your professional comfort zone, embracing perpetual learning, and in some instances, letting go of perfectionism.
