The christening ceremony marks an important milestone in the life of the submarine as it officially enters service with the United States Navy. The ceremony is an opportunity for friends and family of those who have served, or are currently serving, in the military to come together to honor the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our country.

Upon commissioning, she will be the ninth ship of the name to the United States, representing a legacy of service going back to the earliest days of the Continental Navy. USS MASSACHUSETTS (SSN 798) is a Virginia class fast attack nuclear submarine capable of a variety of missions vital to national security, and following commissioning is planned to be homeported in Groton, CT.
During the christening ceremony there will be a traditional breaking of champagne against the bow by Ship Sponsor Ms. Sheryl Sandberg, founder of LeanIn.org which is dedicated to helping women achieve their ambitions and work to create an equal world, and former COO of Meta Technologies. This will be followed by a speech honoring those who have served or are currently serving in the military.

The committee is a non-profit public charity organized under 26 U.S.C. § 501(c)(3) and is working in collaboration with the Massachusetts Bay Council of the Navy League and the Battleship Cove Foundation in Fall River. While the U.S. Navy funds the actual formal ceremony, planning for the other events as part of the commissioning celebration is the responsibility of the Commissioning Committee from the host community and is funded through charitable donations from corporations that contributed toward the construction of the ship as well as members of the host city.
